Plesk: Adding subdomain or domain aliases

Subdomein vs Domeinalias

A subdomain is a variant on the main domain, allowing you to create multiple websites under the same domain. For example, your website is on the main domain cloud86example.com and a test environment on staging.cloud86example.com. In order to add an extra domain in Plesk, see Plesk: Adding extra domain (website).

A domain alias redirects one domain to another domain in the same Web hosting package. For example, the Dutch domain name cloud86example.nl should also end up on the English site cloud86example.com. Do you want to refer to a domain that is not in your Web hosting? Then you will have to forward the domain, see the guide Plesk: Domain forwarding/redirect.

We can make both of these adjustments from the Plesk Control Panel. A Subdomains or domain alias do not count toward your Web hosting domain limits. See below the separate sections for creating a Subdomain, in our example staging.cloud86example.com and how we set up a domain alias which redirects cloud86example.nl to cloud86example.com.

For illustration purposes, we use the domain cloud86example.com always replace it with your own domain in question. The domain is whatever is behind the @ sign in the mail address (@cloud86example.com) or entered in the url bar in the browser (after https://www. or https://).

Login on Plesk Control Panel

  1. In My Cloud86 (link), click in the left menu on My Services.
  2. Click the 3 dots behind the web hosting package you want to see in Plesk and click View Details.
  3. Under the heading Manage Webhosting (middle of the page), click on Websites & Domains.
  4. You will now be automatically logged into the Plesk Control Panel.

Adding a new subdomain in Plesk

A Subdomain is a variant on the main domain, allowing you to create multiple websites under the same domain. For example, your website is on the main domain cloud86example.com and a test environment on staging.cloud86example.com.

  1. In Plesk, click in the main menu on Add Subdomain.
  2. Enter the subdomain you want to add, in our example staging. Leave the Document root for what it is unless you want to explicitly change it and click OK.
  3. An SSL certificate is now automatically requested for this domain, it can take up to 4 hours for it to be automatically activated. You can also request it manually with the guide Request Free SSL Certificate from Let's Encrypt.
  4. You can now reach the subdomain in our example using the url staging.cloud86example.com. Always replace the domain cloud86example.com with your own domain.

Adding a Domain alias

A Domain alias redirects one domain to another domain in the same Web hosting package. For example, the Dutch domain name cloud86example.nl should also end up on the English site cloud86example.com.

  1. In Plesk, click in the main menu on Add Domain Alias.
  2. In the next menu, enter the domain alias, in our example cloud86example.nl, and select the services you want to forward to this domain. In our example, the mail is forwarded (info@cloud86example.nl, is received at info@cloud86example.com) and the website is forwarded with an HTTP code 301.
  3. The domain cloud86example.nl now redirects to cloud86example.com. Replace the domains cloud86example.nl and cloud86example.com with the domains for which want to make an alias and the domain the alias redirects to.
  4. If you get a message in the right bottom stating that the domain is not resolvable, verify that the DNS Zone has been added in My Cloud86 (Add a domain to DNS) and that you waited at least 4 hours after registering/transferring the domain before testing the domain.

If you need some help, you can always reach our support desk by email support@cloud86.io and on weekdays from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm you can also reach us by phone and via the chat in My Cloud86.
