Microsoft 365: How to link your domain to Microsoft 365

In this guide, we explain how you can connect your own domain to Microsoft365 so you can start using it for Mail and Office.

  1. Login to Microsoft365 as administrator: https://admin.microsoft.com/.
  2. In Microsoft 365 (M365), click in the left menu on Show All.
  3. In the left menu, go to Settings and then Domains.
  4. Click here on + Add domain.
  5. Follow the steps for Microsoft 365 (see below). To link a domain to Microsoft 365, you have two steps. The first step is to verify that you own the domain. And adjusting the DNS records so that mail runs through Microsoft 365. That last step is called Connecting Domain at Microsoft.
  6. After you have created all the records (see below) and you have waited up to 4 hours, click Continue. If all the settings are correct then you will get a message that the installation is completed.
  7. Click Done and you will see your newly added domain in the domains overview.

Step 1: Verify the domain

  1. Enter the domain name and click Use this domain.
  2. Verify the domain, if you have management over the domain (DNS) use Add a TXT record.
  3. Add the TXT record to the DNS Zone This may take 4 hours to implement around the world.

Step 2: Connecting domain

  1. When asked how to connect the domain, choose Add your own DNS records.
  2. To use Microsoft 365 you will need to change/create 3 records. To adjust the DNS Zone at Cloud86, see the following article Adjusting DNS Settings, section Connecting domain to Microsoft 365.

Note: The moment these records are active, (external) mail is no longer delivered to the previous mail provider. All mail is now forwarded to Microsoft 365 and this is where the mail addresses must be present to be used. Do you use a contact form on the website? Then you will also have to adjust the SMTP settings here so that it uses Microsoft 365.
