How to add an email account in Mail (Mac)

This article tells you how to add a mail account to a Mac's mail application.

For illustration purposes, we use the domain cloud86example.com always replace it with your own domain in question. The domain is whatever is behind the @ sign in the mail address (@cloud86example.com) or entered in the url bar in the browser (after https://www. or https://).

Adding IMAP to Mail (Mac)

  1. On your iMac/Apple computer, go to Mail: Mac_ Mail logo (ALL).jpg
  2. In the upper left corner, click Mail and select Add Account....
  3. Select Other Mail account... and Continue.
  4. Fill in the requested information:
    • Name: (you may choose what you call the account)
    • Email address: (your email address)
    • Password: (known to you)
  5. Click on Log in.
  6. The program will then indicate, "Unable to verify account name or password" but a screen will open where you can enter the following information:
    1. Account type: IMAP
    2. Incoming mail server: Enter the incoming mail server, in our example cloud86example.com, replace this with your own domain, or in the case of an external website with the Plesk server address (see manual: How to use the Cloud86 mailserver with an external website).
    3. Outgoing mail server: Enter the outgoing mail server, in our example cloud86example.com, replace it with your own domain, or in the case of an external website with the Plesk server address (see manual: How to use the Cloud86 mailserver with an external website).
  7. Click Log in.
  8. Select the apps you want to use. Make sure you at least have Mail checked and then click Done.
  9. After this, your mail account has been added.

Troubleshooting

No connection is made to the mail server after adding the mailbox

Possibly something is not set properly, check the settings

  1. In the upper left corner, click Mail and select Settings.
  2. Verify the settings for the account that is not connecting properly (see General IMAP/STMP/POP Settings). For example, in the image below, the port is incorrect for incoming mail. Port 143 should be 993 for incoming mail!
  3. If the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) is not working properly, you can try port 587 instead of Port 465.

Cannot connect to mail server / emails are not retrieved or sent

If the password has been changed recently, the password may not yet have been updated in the Apple Keychain. To change the password in the keychain see the following guide from Apple: Managing Passwords with Keychains on the Mac.
